Backyard Bandits – Raccoon Family Visit

Posted on

I wasn’t expecting wildlife drama with my morning coffee, but nature always finds a way to keep things interesting.

Just a few days ago, I glanced out the window and spotted a furry parade making its way through my backyard—a mama raccoon and four baby kits toddling behind her in perfect single‑file formation. Before I had time to think, I sprinted upstairs, grabbed my camera, and dashed to the second‑floor balcony, hoping to catch at least a few frames before they vanished.

Let’s just say… these raccoons were on a mission. I had maybe two minutes—max—before they crawled under the fence into the neighbor’s yard. With a protective net partially blocking my view, getting clean shots wasn’t easy, but I clicked away through the mesh and morning haze anyway.

And somehow, one of those quick snaps was chosen as East County Magazine’s Photo of the Week! 👉 See the feature

Sure, these aren’t the crispest or most composed photos I’ve ever taken—but they capture a fleeting, magical moment of local wildlife doing its thing. It reminded me that sometimes the beauty of photography lies not in perfection, but in being present (and fast on the shutter!) when the raccoons come calling.
