Love-in-a-Mist – Bloom of the Week

Posted on

Each week, I feature a different seasonal flower from San Diego’s gardens and wild spaces in my Bloom of the Week series—both here on the blog and in my Pixels gallery. It’s an ongoing celebration of what’s blooming now—captured through vintage and modern lenses that bring softness, character, and painterly depth to each image. These curated floral photographs are available as fine art prints, wall décor, and nature-inspired gifts—perfect for flower lovers, art collectors, and anyone looking to bring botanical beauty into their space.

Ethereal Beauty from Iceland

This week’s featured bloom is the delicate Nigella damascena, also known as Love-in-a-Mist. Though common in English cottage gardens, this flower is rarely seen in Southern California—and I’ve long wanted to photograph it after admiring its dreamy look online. My chance came during a family trip to Iceland in August 2023. On our last day, we visited the Grasagarður Botanical Garden in Reykjavík—a tranquil green space filled with blooms rarely found in San Diego. To my delight, Love-in-a-Mist was blooming there in all its airy elegance.

This intricate blue bloom floats like a whisper against a moody backdrop. Its soft, thread-like foliage and spiky seed pods add to its wild, fairy-tale charm. The shifting shades of blue make it feel almost otherworldly.

Seen from the side, its sculptural petals and cool hues are bathed in soft light—surrounded by a painterly blur that adds depth and calm.

Although often found in charming gardens elsewhere, Love-in-a-Mist is a rare treat in Southern California—making it a perfect choice for this week’s fine art print collection.
